Moving towards carbon neutrality: ARANIA updates its Carbon Footprint Verification according to ISO 14064 and ISO 14067
Two big steps on the road to neutrality: Arania renews its carbon footprint verification according to ISO 14064 and verifies its Arania PCF Tool for product carbon footprint calculation according to ISO 14067.
The road to a carbon neutral industry goes largely through the decarbonization of steel, which is why ARANIA works tirelessly to reduce its own emissions and offer its customers lower-emission products that help decarbonize the supply chain within a circular economy.
This summer, ARANIA has accomplished an additional step towards carbon neutrality: the company has successfully renewed the Corporate Carbon Footprint Verification (CCF) according to the ISO 14064 standard.
In this regard, ARANIA achieved the first two scopes of ISO 14064 certification back in 2022. This year, ARANIA has now also reached the third scope of ISO 14064 certification. This is not just another simple achievement, as it reinforces Arania’s leadership in the fight against climate change within the steel industry.
This CCF Verification allows ARANIA to demonstrate a strong and active commitment to environmental protection, providing at the same time more transparency and better service to its clients, as well as supporting them in the reduction of their own carbon footprint.
This standard establishes an international certification that establishes guidelines for quantifying and verifying an organisation’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, a process starting from raw materials purchasing, including manufacturing process at the ARANIA site, as well as transportation to final destination, energy consumption, waste generation and so on.
This review process involves three main stages:
- Scope determination: In this first stage, the extent of Arania’s GHG inventory is defined by specifying the sources and categories of emissions that will be included in the verification process. This ensures that all significant sources of emissions are taken into consideration.
- GHG quantification and reporting: The required data on GHG emissions are collected according to the defined scope. This information comes from sources such as energy consumption, transportation, steel manufacturing and other activities. The total volume of GHG emissions can thus be calculated and the information is then reported with full transparency.
- Independent verification: At this stage, ARANIA relies on a renowned specialised external auditor in order to review and certify the accuracy and comprehensiveness of the data collected, the calculations performed and the fulfilment of the ISO 14064 requirements. At the end of July 2023, the auditing firm issued a report validating the submitted information.
In a nutshell, CCF Verification according to ISO 14064 standard provides credibility to ARANIA’s emissions data, a development leading to increased stakeholder confidence and guaranteeing compliance with international standards. Furthermore, this certification helps to optimise the environmental management of emissions, establishing more effective reduction targets and setting new milestones towards environmental sustainability
ARANIA works with products highly customized to the needs of each of its customers, in which different raw materials and manufacturing processes are used. For this reason, a calculation tool called ARANIA PFC Tool has been developed, which allows to calculate the emissions generated by each product along the supply chain. This tool has been verified by LRQA as complying with the highest standards such as ISO 14067.
What is incorporated in the Product Carbon Footprint calculation? The criterion used for the calculation has been from the cradle to the door, that is, from the procurement of our raw materials, as well as their transport, and also their manufacturing process in the ARANIA plant. For this purpose, data are taken from the last manufacturing processes carried out, where the raw materials used are individually analyzed, as well as the manufacturing processes used for the specific product.
This allows us to issue certificates per product, detailing in a transparent way, the emissions generated during the supply chain of the material.
ARANIA, in its mission to accompany and advise its customers in their decarbonization process through the decarbonization of steel, has thus managed to comply with the most demanding guarantees currently on the market and thus offer the best service to its customers.
The objective of ARANIA is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040, anticipating the deadline set by the European Union and taking the lead in terms of decarbonisation efforts in the cold-rolled steel industry in Southern Europe.
Accordingly, several programmes have been implemented throughout the entire organisation in order to steadily and continuously reduce emissions in all areas of the company, especially those related to raw materials, production and logistics, but no process is neglected.
