DECARBONIZING PRECISION STEEL STRIP: ARANIA PRESENTS ARANIA D-CARB, ITS DECARBONIZATION SOLUTION
EU Government has set a clear goal, to decarbonize the industry in the region until 2050. End customers are increasing their demand for true sustainable products and purchasers around the globe are including emission levels as a factor in their decision-making processes. Companies are drawing up decarbonization plans, some even aiming to beat the set goal and decarbonize even faster.
The steel industry is key in enabling the decarbonization of many industries. Steel production alone generates around 25% of the total CO2 tonnage emitted by the industrial activity worldwide (Tianyang Lei et al, 2023), accounting for 7% of total human generated emissions (World Economic Forum, 2022). If we do not decarbonize steel, reaching our common goal as society will become highly complex.
For this reason, both government and private parties are heavily investing in transforming the industry in a truly new industrial revolution. The World Economic Forum (2022) stated that “primary steel will continue to be required to meet 60% of steel needs by 2050 and must be decarbonized”.
To decarbonize the iron ore-based steelmaking, improvements in the existing Blast Furnaces (such as top recycling gas, the use of biocoal, hydrogen injection or the use of renewable energies) are being put in place while new steel mills with Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) technology are being built from scratch. A race against the clock to transform the steel industry with solutions that are reliable for all kind of steel transformers with all kinds of chemical and mechanical specifications.
ARANIA believes in this decarbonization journey and already defined in 2023 an ambitious decarbonization plan targeting carbon neutrality by 2040. A cross-functional task-force has been and continues working on different projects aiming to reduce the environmental impact of its own production and offices, logistics and raw materials. Measures such as the use of 100% renewable electricity, self-generation of 8% of its electric consumption through solar panels, reduction of consumption through LED lighting or the installation of BEV charging points have been in place since a few years now.
ARANIA also believes in a circular industry, where only 1,3% of its waste ends up in a landfill, recycling, reusing or repurposing 98,7% of its overall waste and continuing to find ways to put waste into value to maximize circularity.
Logistics are analyzed in each case to find the best solution for each customer, also from a sustainability perspective. The maximization of intermodal transportation (including train), its pallet returning program or the reduction and substitution of packaging materials for recycled options are just some of the different activities being carried out to minimize its footprint on the environment.
Although big steps forward have been made, the raw material remains the main contributor to the overall footprint of precision cold rollers. To tackle this challenge ARANIA presents its own mass balanced solution: ARANIA D-CARB
This solution allows steel transformers to decarbonize at their own pace while promoting investments to continue making real improvements in the current BOF and future DRI production processes. This solution allows all kind of grades as well as transformation processes to decarbonize in reliable supply chains, take advantage of made CO2 improvements and all verified by the most demanding norms.
ARANIA’s organizational footprint has been verified by the ISO14064 and its Product Footprint Calculation Tool has been verified by the ISO14067, both most demanding norms today to ensure accuracy and transparency. The ARANIA D-CARB solution has been validated according to the principles of the GHG Protocol for Project Accounting.
The verification was carried out according to Assurance Engagements (ISAE) 3000 revised “Assurance Engagements other than Audits and Reviews of Historical Financial Information” by the worldwide known certification partner LRQA.
